Asbestos can cause lung cancer. It is a matter of some debate how much exposure to asbestos is needed to cause lung cancer, but with exposure to asbestos the risk of lung cancer can be increased fivefold. Smoking increases the risk of lung cancer 11 fold and therefore a smoker who is exposed to asbestos is 55 times more likely to develop lung cancer.
