Pleural Thickening - Signs & Symptoms

Pleural thickening often develops as a result of exposure to asbestos. When microscopic asbestos fibres become lodged in the lungs they can cause inflammation of the ‘pleura’ a thin membrane that covers the lungs and lines the inside of the chest walls. The lung occasionally can become encased in a thick fibrous layer that prevents it functioning normally.

Symptoms of pleural thickening may not appear until 10 years, or more, after first exposure to asbestos. The condition can cause breathing difficulties and problems associated with the lung because it gradually contracts the breathing space. Excess fluid in the chest is often seen on X-rays, and is referred to as a ‘pleural effusion’.

Pleural thickening can affect either one or both lungs to a degree that varies from very minor to extensive. A CT scan is usually needed to accurately record the extent of the pleural thickening. If the scarring is extensive the condition is referred to as ‘diffuse pleural thickening’which means the area affected is extensive. However, diffuse pleural thickening is not always linked to asbestos exposure.

Pleural thickening can cause symptoms of:

  • Progressive breathlessness
  • Reduced chest wall movement
  • Chest pain
  • General disability from impaired lung function

A persistent cough is another possible symptom. The thickening does not get better so symptoms can progress or they may stay the same.

Pleural thickening is also a sign of changes to the body as a result of asbestos so it can mean that the individual is at a small but significantly increased risk of developing a more serious asbestos related condition. Alternatively it may not prove disabling or produce significant physical symptoms.
