Miner's Knee Injury (Bursitis)

Continually kneeling or crawling can put huge strain on the joints and limbs and lead to an injury commonly known as ‘miners’ beat knee’ because of its correlation with the coal mining industry. Symptoms include pain, swelling and stiffness.

Test cases for compensation are currently being litigated in the Courts on behalf of coal miners who have suffered knee conditions as a result of their working environment in the coal mining industry.

The test cases against the National Coal Board and British Coal Corporation (known as British Coal) seek to establish whether or not as employers, they were negligent and whether or not they should have foreseen the risk of knee injury to people who worked in such workplace conditions.

Until the outcome of these test cases are known, it is very difficult to advise with any degree of certainty whether any compensation claim for miner's' beat knee would be successful.

It is suggested that the Department of Trade and Industry may eventually set up a scheme similar to that which they previously ran for those suffering from respiratory diseases such as COPD, and from Hand/Arm Vibration syndrome.
