Bursitis - Signs and Symptoms

The essential symptom of the miner’s knee injury called ‘beat knee bursitis’ is pain, localised near the knee joint. Beat knee bursitis can be the result of overuse, stress or direct trauma to the knee, such as the repeated bumping or the prolonged pressure of kneeling. However, bursitis may also result from an infection, arthritis or gout.

Bursitis symptoms can be acute and immediate and can arise suddenly, causing sharp pain. They are caused by inflammation or irritation of the bursae which are very small, soft, fluid-filled sacs surrounding muscles, bones and tendons. They cushion the motion of joints.

When they are inflamed, the bursae fill up with excess fluid which results in acute pain and causes symptoms which may include:

  • Discomfort or, in many cases, severe pain. The pain is likely to be worse when you make unaccustomed movements or strain the joint muscles
  • Tenderness of the joint to touch or minor movement
  • Limitation or total cessation of movement in the joint
  • Swelling, soreness and redness in the area around the joint or tendons

Serious problems occur when the condition becomes chronic as a result of long-term damage.
